True Love

Living through Surrogate
"Hello!"
"Hi fatty!"
"Just like that..."
"Was missing you"
"What could be more good reason than this?"
"Yeah, I was out for a morning walk"
"Yeah, I came to your house and walked around it for three times. But poor me, I couldn't see you."
"So that dog must be more fortunate than me"
"I don't even get chance to see you and you take it to walk with you. Doesn't that make it luckier than me?"
"Yeah-yeah. As if you have eaten it."
"How come you know that it is sweet?"
"Think I should chop your luicy and taste it!?" chuckles.
"But here is light in my room."
"May be of your love."
"Your love is not so sincere otherwise I would have enlightened your room too."
"Don't cut!"
"Okay then."
This was Dig and his one way dialogues on his cell phone. He had different names for different girl he was involved with. He never disclosed his real identity unless they themselves find it. Sometime he was Sam, sometime Vicky, sometime Karan and many more names he had for himself. Don't know why the girls never doubted him. They believed whatever he said. They seemed more comfortable with him although he used common cheesy words while having chat with them. He had a theory, "Never ever tell truth to any girl. Never try to speak out your heart with them. Coz all they want is the promise of breaking stars from the sky, making moon come down to earth to praise their beauty, and many more illogical thoughts." He had other theories too. He told them each time after receiving a call from his girlfriend(s).
He shared his rented room with another guy. A room with two single beds and next to it was a study table with chair for each. They have been sharing the room since quite long. Both of them had come from far village to complete their higher study there. And both of them had their own way of living there.
Most of the time, Jeewan was busy with his studies. Dig called him life. Dig said, "Hey life why do you sulk every time." In good mood life would just stare at him and in bad times Dig used to have a long lecture of philosophy from him. And Dig used to say, "I was talking to myself. I was just complaining about my life. It wasn't you I was talking about. Why do you think everything that happens around you is because you exist?" He used to take something (anything) from the table in his hand and flunk at his bed. Then he used to move out of the room for a while. He used to come back after a while with a smile and a new story.
That day too he had a new story to tell.
"Hey life can you lend me some dough. I had to go for an urgent meeting."
He said with no sincere sentiments on his face. This was usual thing for Jeewan. He knew his story and urgency, as it was not the first time. Might be some freaky girl had called him on date. This was the only urgency that mattered for him.
Dig went out of the room with some cash on his hand and didn’t forget to mention, “I’ll pay back soon.” He understood what soon meant for Dig. It almost meant never but in times of trouble Dig would never think of how much he had taken before and spend to his fullest ability. That’s why Jeewan never thought of not lending him money. After all that help earned him much more in the college.
Dig had too many acquaintances in his college. Some were good and some were bad. Jeewan was never bothered by the bad ones and he was always helped by the good ones. And also being Dig’s friend meant a big excuse for breaking college rules. Besides, the interesting stories of Dig entertained him no less than any super hit melodrama running in the theatre.
When Dig returned late in the evening, Jeewan was waiting to hear another story from him. Dig smiled over him. And Jeewan replied with same sort of smile.
“Well, she came to the restaurant to meet me. And you know what happened next. She paid my bill. I saved your money”, said Dig and chucked the note toward him.
“That’s all?” said Jeewan collecting the note lying on his bed.
“Well, that’s all. What more do you expect?” said Dig and turned toward Jeewan.
Jeewan was caring a crooked smile on his face. Dig made his face and turned away. May be he was not in the mood of talking much.
He started scrutinizing his trunk. He then started shuffling his books on the table. And then he was found lying on the bed and hiding himself behind some bulky book. This was the rarest thing Jeewan ever saw in his life. All he saw was Dig talking on the phone, typing message to someone or reading message in a chuffed way and asking for how to reply message and et cetera. He did his studies just the day before his exams. And every one had to do their part. He allocated some chapters to all with whom he had good relation with, which included his teachers too.
Jeewan gazed him in surprise. After a while, Dig broke the silence.
“All these years, my father looked after me. He bore all expenses. Brought me up giving all the happiness he was capable of.” He paused. “When he said me to study, it never mattered. All his words went above from my head. But now this girl, whom I have barely met for couple of weeks, says me to study and guess what I am behind my books!”
Jeewan didn’t know what to do. He kept on listening like an obedient student listening to his teacher.
“These girls are amazing things. They can make everything possible.” said Dig taking a big sigh.
Jeewan had no other option than to wait for the right situation to come. Time went on. He informed Dig about dinner. Dig turned his back toward him and continued going through the pages.
Jeewan didn’t like having dinner alone. So he waited.
May be Dig had breakfast with the girl he met but he had nothing. So he once again insisted Dig for dinner.
“You know what she says?” said he.
“She said her father wouldn’t allow me to marry her, as if I was dreaming to settle with her. And If I wanted to continue I should prove it through better result. And you know my condition!” he continued without dropping his book.
He sat with his legs folded, tussled his hair with his free hand and then chucked his book on the other hand next to the pillow.
It was sure that there was more to come from him. Jeewan was eagerly waiting. But he didn’t know how to react.
“She said she won’t meet me again until I showed her better result…And when I told her that I won’t be getting better results because I hate my studies and that implied we will never meet. She said, ‘so be it then!’” he said mockingly.
“Bitch… she thinks I am not gonna get anyone except her. But you know it’s easy to dump one then to be dumped by other. Right now, I am feeling the pain of being rejected and it really hurts.”
“I think you should calm down ….” I said, “and let her go out of mind. After all she’s not that she is the last girl on the earth. Or you can study…..”
“You don’t know how hard it is to act damn stud, when your heart is trembling and leaving its place. You don’t know how hard it is to replace your expression with fury or a smile, when you are supposed to burst out in tears. After all you are a looser living through surrogate. You can acknowledge but can’t feel.” He exploded without letting me to complete my words. “….I broke up with her.”
Jeewan was awe struck to hear Dig say all these. He didn’t know this freaky guy had all those inside him. Emotions! Dig was almost crying. He was black and blue with anger and frustration but tears lacked in his eyes. It appeared as if he had no tears at all.
Jeewan left him alone with his emotion, but checked him time and again. They stayed same for almost an hour.
Just then Dig’s cell phone rang. He had kept it on the table. As soon as the phone bell rang he leaped for his cell. He checked the caller and started grinning. He had a different brightness in his face. Jeewan understood, it was the same old story after all.
“Hello”
“Was missing you!”
“You didn’t come in my dream last night, that’s why?”
So on and so on.
